VISA 241: Introduction to Digital Photography
For this project, the only instruction given was to find and photograph 5 circles. I was interested in investigating the artistic irony of the circle as an impossible geometric form; the idea that the 'perfect circle' does not occur naturally nor can it be crafted artificially. I decided to visit UBC's Museum of Anthropology to explore this relationship between naturally occurring circles and intentional artistic geometry by photographing circular tree knots on xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) totem poles. I created this series of photographs to highlight how artists using wood as a medium are forced to incorporate or reject natural circular structures in their material.
