Infographic: Addressing Gun Violence in America
INFO 419: Information Visualization
The purpose of this assignment was to showcase our data collection, data refining, and graphic design abilities by addressing the sensitive topic of gun violence in America. To create this infographic, I sourced a dataset from Quoctrung Bui and Margot Sanger-Katza's New York Times article "How to Prevent Gun Deaths? Where Experts and the Public Agree." Using OpenRefine and Microsoft Excel, I cleaned the data and imported it into Infogram so I could use the platform’s tools to arrange text, images, icons, and graphs. The overall message that I tried to communicate is the alarming amount of gun-related deaths that occur in America in comparison to other parts of the world. By extension, I also aimed to convey a summary of the information that is outlined in Bui and Sanger-Katz’s article. Specifically, who they surveyed for the article, which three gun-control measures were reported most effective, and whether stakeholders support these measures. I want viewers of this infographic to take away the information mentioned above, in addition to a serious outlook towards the topic of gun control.
