The Utopian Politics of Satirical Fake News
ARTH 480: Visual and Digital Media Theory
Below are the presentation slides to accompany a discussion I lead about the potential for satirical fake news to have a positive impact. I summarized and explored an article by Ian Reilly outlining the work of culture jamming activist group, the Yes Men, for our weekly seminar of 15 students. Reilly believes technology has opened up room for the nonprofessional, non-corporate satirist to perform and succeed. His article demonstrates that the larger project of news parody is not restricted to the controlled environments of corporate print and television. Rather, his work describes how the cultural production of satirical fake news has emerged from other areas of civil society through the efforts of media activists, such as the Yes Men. After presenting the article, I facilitated further discussion with my professor and colleagues based on the topic.
